VW Polo GTI: small, nimble and powered

Written on September 1, 2008 – 1:35 am | by admin |

This new VW Polo is small, nimble and powered by a 20-valve 1.8-litre turbo-charged petrol engine. In this 1190-kilogram car, the engine will produce 150 bhp and torque of 229Nm at a very low 1950 rpm, thus it is easily able to bring it to 62mph up from rest in just 8.2 seconds using a slick short throwing five-speed manual transmission (no auto version if offered globally). The Polo GTi will also reach a top speed of 134 mph with available tarmac, which puts it at the top of the hot hatch segment. Its length of 3196 mm, width of 1650 mm, height of 1467 mm and wheelbase of 2466 mm gives it a compact hatch profile with surprising space inside.

This hot little Polo pays homage to the Mk5 Golf GTi with similar looking i6-inch alloys, red brake calipers, polished rear exhaust tail pipes, a top rear spoiler, a 15mm lower stance on sports suspension and the mandatory GTi logo on a honeycomb style-grille. On the inside of this car it is every little bit like the Golf GTi with torso hugging sports seats and aluminium detailing sit alongside black and red stitched seat belts and a three-spoke leather covered steering wheel.

Safety has not be skipped with The Polo GTi coming fully equipped with six airbags, anti-lock brakes, an electronic stability program and solid anchors behind the tasty alloys. Priced the Polo GTi is making it very affordable and a likely niche player in the growing hot hatch market.
